Ocean Shorts

Program Description:

A meditation on themes of the ocean, sand, and the preciousness of the natural environment through different cinematic styles and mediums, including sand and salt animation, experimental, and documentary filmmaking.

Featuring the Following Films:

‘A Tangled Tale’

Directed by Corrie Francis Park

About the film:

In this unusual romance, hand-tinted sand, becomes a metaphor for two souls as they join and separate. A lonely fish, hooked by an angler's line, encounters another in the same dire situation. As the two struggle, the physical connection moves deeper. Is it love or merely a will to survive?

With a radical new approach to traditional sand animation, Corrie Francis Parks brings vibrant color to a watery underworld in this philosophical tale of entangling attraction.

5:30 minutes ~ Animation

Directed by Stephanie Maxwell

About the film:

“Ocean” is a dramatic and powerful choreography of light and motion in the ocean's 'swash' zone, the turbulent area of water that washes up on the beach. Filmed in HD in close-up detail on the beaches around Newport, Oregon during Summer 2013, sunlight on moving water and bottom sand reveal the infinitely animated and ever-changing world of visual compositions and events that have a charged, emotive power when presented as distinct variations and themes interwoven with the musical score. The film is lively and sensuous and reveals an extraordinary beauty that is palpable in the most minute and subtle domains along the beach. "Ocean" is an intoxicating experience, where the powerful allure and exquisiteness of the ocean evoke a blissful insight into an undiscovered beauty.

12 minutes ~ Experimental
